Check and verify reliable "due date" to establish gestational age

Be prepared for obstetrical emergencies-keep a copy of prenatal records, labs-blood type. Check your cell phone for international coverage.
Check insurance coverage for out of state or out of country travel
Comfort items- loose clothing, pillows, snacks, support hose, bottled water, check airline and hotel accommodations
Keep the itinery light – do not schedule too many sight seeing activities. Keep travel to 5-6 hour per day.
Paperwork- passport, visa, immunization records, check airline/cruise regulations for pregnancy restrictions.
Medications- have medications (that were filled in the USA) for antibiotics, tocolytics (terbutaline), pain meds and antiemetics- with you for immediate use. Some recommended over the counter medications are: benadryl, Tylenol® and hydrocortisone cream. If you are on routine medications such as insulin- take extra supplies.
Review pregnancy danger signs- headache, leg pains, leaking fluid, right upper quadrant pain, bleeding, contractions, etc.
Blood clots- be aware that long travel periods in confined seating greatly increase the risk of blood clots in the legs which can become a pulmonary embolus.
Food and water precautions. Many infectious diseases are transmitted by contaminated food or water. Use bottled water. Do not use ice.

We do not recommend travel after 24 weeks of gestation. The best time to travel is 14-24 weeks. Most airlines allow travel up to 36 weeks but require a letter.

www.iamat.org.Seat belts- wear your seat belt- both lap and shoulder belt. Buckle the belt low on your hips. DO NOT put the lap belt across the uterus. Place the shoulder belt across the center of your chest and between your breasts. Take out any slack in the belt for a snug fit. Be aware of airbags. Move your seat back from the dash to allow extra room for the air bag to deploy.
