The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, on June 8, 2006, approved GARDISIL® ( Merck & Co., Inc.) for use in women ages 9 to 26 for vaccination against HPV ( Human Papillomavirus) types 16 and 18. The vaccine also helps protect against vulvar and vaginal cancers caused by those same types. The vaccination requires three injections over six months and costs approximately $500.00.
